If you would like to improve your sales substantially by wowing your customers with stunning displays, then this workshop is the vehicle to do that. It is proven that customers make up to 80% of their buying decisions based on visual stimulation. On average 30% of all purchases are unintended and made on the spur of the moment – i.e. displays promote this “buying with your eyes” approach to strong merchandising design elements. Don’t miss out on this great opportunity – book soon and see the rewards for yourself.
Who should attend:
This workshop is a step up from the Intro course that Dynamic Solution Synergies (Terry & Rick), have offered to SANA members before. Thus:
- If you have done the Intro course before and are hungry to learn more and stretch yourself then this is the course for you.
- If you have not done the Intro course but have been doing displays for some time or have a good understanding of the basics of design and displays you are welcome to attend (i.e. as long as you understand that it is always advisable to do the Introduction course first).
- This course will also greatly benefit nursery managers or owners that would like to be able to improve the displays and skills of their staff by learning how to identify basic design errors in displays, with the view to improving the quality of displays in your nursery.
Outcomes and Overview:
You will start with a refresher on design principles, where you will identify design principles and also learn to identify design principle errors, thereby learning how to correct them. Besides this you will learn:
- New information and analytical display skills

It is due to these challenges and requests from the industry that DSS have put together a fantastic 2 day training programme for SANA members to help equip themselves and their teams with the knowledge, skills and attitudes to make the business in which they work thrive. Apart from learning the skills to make your business grow and increase customer numbers and loyalty those that attend the course will have a “life-changing” experience!

AgriSETA Training
What is AgriSETA?
AgriSETA is the Agricultural Sector Education Training Authority. Their mission is to create and promote opportunities for social, economic and employment growth for agri enterprises, in conjunction with other stakeholders in agriculture, through relevant, quality and accessible education, training and development in both primary and secondary agriculture.
Through registering under AgriSETA for skills levy and paying the relevant contribution, SANA members assist this body in creating opportunities for training assistance in the primary agricultural fields.
Dr Di Goodwin, Education Portfolio member is actively involved in training initiatives and communication regarding courses and skills development training is sent to members via the SANA office. Please keep an eye out for this communication!
Are you registered under AgriSETA for the training levy?
How do you know if you are? Well you should be registered under the AgriSETA SIC code 11121 or 11120 which is for ALL Ornamental Horticultural products.
Should you be registered under AgriSETA rather than any other seta?
As an industry we determined the scarce and critical skills in Ornamental Horticulture and it was found that a critical constraint in our industry is the poor educational levels of a large proportion of our labour force (entry level). We also need plant production specialists and company supervisors. All future training has to be occupationally based and the following are occupations that have been identified as scarce and critical skills in Ornamental Horticulture for which training monies can be made available so if you are registered with AgriSETA you could benefit from AgriSETA’s Mandatory Grant:
Production Nurseries:
- Propogator
- Plant maintainer (incl. tasks related to watering, pest control, fertilization, pruning, weeding etc.)
- Planter/bag filler
- Selector/puller (incl. tasks related to plant ID, labeling etc)
- Stock controller/store room assistant
- Section head
- Nursery manager (incl. tasks related to planning growth programmes etc.)
- Pest controller (licensed)
Retail Nurseries:
- Sales person (sell, load trolley, costumer cars)
- Plant maintainer
- Stock (tasks related to receive, dispatch, control etc.)
- Cashiers
- Customer service (information to customers)
- Display person
- Nursery manager
- Plant manager
SANA Training Workshops … Where could you have got the money from to finance your staff’s attendance?
If your company has an annual turn-over of greater than R500 000-00 and you have completed and submitted your Workplace Skills Plan (WSP) correctly by the 30th June each year, you will receive from AgriSETA from the Skills Development Fund (SDF) the following amount:
- 1% of your payroll goes to SARS and of this 20% goes to the National Skills Fund (NSF) for job creation.
- Of the remaining 80%, 10% goes to running the SETA i.e. buying chairs, paying salaries, allocating bursaries etc.
- Of the 70% remaining 20% goes into the Discretionary Grant to achieve the targets of the Sector Skill Plan
- And 50% goes back to you, the employer, as the Mandatory Grant, if you submit your Workplace Skills Plan and annual training schedule.
Unfortunately, too many in our industry do not know how to go about training their staff or completing the WPS and so forfeit their Mandatory Grant contribution. All this unclaimed money is then added to the Discretionary Fund and the SETA uses it for further training of scarce and critical skills.
How can we as an industry benefit from the Discretionary Fund?
If you go on the Agriseta website www.agriseta.co.za you will see the following form: AGRISETA DISCRETIONARY GRANT AGREEMENT FOR BURSARIES, INTERNSHIPS, WORKPLACE EXPERIENCE AND APPRENTICESHIPS (BIWA)
Completing and submitting of this form from November to February every year enables you to:
- Apply for bursaries for your staff
- Employ for a year as interns, students who are still studying horticulture (Agriseta will pay up to R2750-00 per month towards their salary)
- Employ for a year, students who have completed their studies in horticulture and are looking for workplace experience (Agriseta will pay up to R2750-00 per month towards their salary)
All of these help improve the industry and the students that are entering it!
Again if all this money is not used, then a Surplus Fund is established, and the Seta can allocate it to “causes” that it feels is worthwhile! This is where the Ornamental Horticulture Supervisor course received its funding and it will be rolled out next year for Garden Centre Staff and again Growers.
So be proactive as there is money available for our industry if you just do your small part of filling out the necessary forms.
For any assistance, please contact Dr Di Goodwin on 0825573242 or e-mail pep@mwebbiz.co.za.
