In celebration of SANA’s 70th we would like to pay tribute to all those individuals who have played an important role in our industry. There are so many people through the years who have contributed to our association through guidance, involvement on committees and assisting with development in regions.
We all know them… they simply get on with it in their quiet, unassuming way. Let’s pay tribute to these heroes of our industry!
FOUNDERS OF THE SA ROSE INDUSTRY (TBA)In the days gone by the Rose Growers dominated SANA.
Jan Roeloffs (Roeloffs Nurseries) was the major supplier of bare root roses to garden centres and was on the SANA executive as chairman of the Rose Growers Sector for around 20 years. Still the largest producer of bare root Standard Roses in the world – all exported to Europe. Egmont Behrens was President of SANA in the 60’s and attended all Rose Grower meetings and was active until the age of 95. Folkers Herholdt took over from his father (well known Herholdts Rose and Fruit Tree Nursery in Eikenhof). Jan Heholdt was very active in SANA. He was the only professional rose breeder in South Africa and brought the new varieties to SA in the 50’s, being the representative for Meilland, Tantau, Kordes, Armstrong. |
Heinrich Martin was bedding plant grower and Rose expert and for Buss Nurseries 1955 – 1970 and from 1971 – until recently for Malanseuns.
Dr Pat Klesser virologist at Roodeplaat (SANA Gold Medal) She was the first in the world to clear a virus infected rose by heat therapy. It was due to her that all rose growers made sure to have virus free blocks of mother rootstock and the major varieties and to apply hygiene dipping cutting tools in a formalin solution. Willie Krause of Eden Rose Nurseries in Paarl. He was very active in the SANA CAPE branch or what it was at the time in the sixties seventies and the dominant supplier of Roses in the region.
