SANA Gold Medal 2026

A distinguished and much-loved figure within the horticultural industry and among rose enthusiasts across South Africa, this recipient has dedicated more than five decades to the cultivation, breeding and promotion of roses. Through a lifelong passion for horticulture, he has played an instrumental role in nurturing a deep appreciation for roses among generations of gardeners and has helped shape the South African rose industry into what it is today.

As the founder of one of the country’s most recognised rose-growing enterprises, established in 1971, he pioneered the propagation of container-grown roses in South Africa – an innovation that transformed the industry by allowing gardeners to select and plant roses throughout most of the year.  His commitment to quality, innovation and education has seen countless rose varieties successfully introduced and trialled for local conditions, making roses more accessible and enjoyable for gardeners nationwide.

Renowned for his exceptional knowledge, practical expertise and unwavering enthusiasm, he continues to inspire gardeners well into his later years through workshops, demonstrations, educational talks and guided rose experiences. His engaging teaching style, combined with humour, storytelling and a genuine love for people, has made him a legendary and highly respected ambassador for roses. Whether sharing practical gardening advice or recounting stories gathered over decades in the industry, he leaves a lasting impression on all who have the privilege of learning from him.

His contribution extends far beyond technical expertise. Through warmth, generosity of spirit and an extraordinary ability to inspire others, he has influenced generations of gardeners, growers and rose lovers. His passion for roses, coupled with his dedication to sharing knowledge and encouraging others, has created a legacy that continues to flourish throughout the horticultural community.

While awarded a Gold Medal in 1992, his continued dedication, innovation and significant contribution to the horticultural industry in the decades since make Ludwig Taschner a truly deserving recipient of renewed recognition.
